Coastal routs James Island for first region win

Raequan Gregg scored 26 points to lead the Coastal Christian Cougars to a 66-32 road win over the James Island Christian Lions Friday.

Coastal Christian (2-3, 1-1) opened in a diamond zone press to attack the younger guards of James Island (0-4, 0-2). With Lions turnovers and open fast-break opportunities, the Cougars jumped out to an early 17-point lead that stretched to a 42-18 advantage by halftime.

“We were getting a lot of pressure up front and were able to turn the momentum up a little,” Coastal head coach Robert Wooley said. “We wanted to play with a high-intensity soft of defense to open up looks for our offense.”

Gregg took advantage of the open opportunities, shooting 11-of-12 from inside the three-point arc. Seth White added 10 points for the Cougars and eight-grader Noah Gregg turned in eight.

“(Raequan Gregg) is our senior leader on the team and definitely someone we’re going to depend on moving forward,” Wooley said. “When he gets in the type of rhythm he was in, it opens the offense up for our whole team.”

The win marks the first conference victory of the season for the Cougars. Dec. 3 they’ll host the Carolina Chargers in their home opener in Mount Pleasant.

“It’s always good to get any win in conference,” Wooley said. “We did a much better job of executing and staying focused. Hopefully, this will give us a momentum boost as we head into the rest of our season.”
