Moultrie News hires new sports reporter
Frankie Mansfield joined the Moultrie News last month as the publication's lead sports writer.
Mansfield is a 2012 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He replaces Tyler Heffernan, now the communications manager at the U.S. Soccer Club in Charleston.
For the past two years, Mansfield served as the sports editor of Dunlap Media, a digital newspaper company in the Upstate of South Carolina. He established a strong track record of quality sports coverage through his work in preps sports and Big South Conference football. He brings a strong command of the new, digital age of journalism built while managing different websites for Dunlap Media, as well as coordinating its social media presence. His work has been featured in several publications, both print and digital, including Bleacher Report, a national leader in sports media.
While at the University of South Carolina, he covered everything from Gamecocks athletics to National Basketball League games for The Carolina Reporter, a student-run newspaper. He worked closely alongside the USC baseball team during their back-to-back national championship run, covered two No. 1 upsets and sat on media row while the Charlotte Bobcats lost their 23rd consecutive game to clinch the worst regular-season record in NBA history.
Also while in college, he worked with The State Newspaper, as an intern and freelancer covering preps sports and community features.
Mansfield grew up on the Isle of Palms and is a graduate of Wando High School. He was raised on the Lowcountry ball fields, playing for, and against, the same teams he now covers for the Moultrie News. Now that he's no longer competing on the fields, his passion has evolved into promoting East Cooper's new generation of amateur athletes.
