A memorial tree for the USS Laffey Association was donated and planted by Bartlett Tree Experts of West Ashley on Nov. 22 at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.
This live oak is the first part of a larger memorial which will include a bronze plaque commemorating the 32 sailors who lost their lives in the World War II kamikaze attack that led to the Laffey being known as “The ship that would not die.”
This attack is depicted in the newly-opened exhibit in the aft gun mount on the Laffey and is now open to the public.
The dedication of the tree and plaque is planned to coincide with the USS Laffey reunion next October.
