The Bishop England Bishops squandered a four-point lead in the final minute of overtime in a 60-59 loss to the Berkeley Stags Saturday in day three of the Lake Marion Invitational in Santee, S.C.

Bishop England (6-5, 2-0) gave away two turnovers to allow Berkeley (6-4) to tie the game late. Scoreless on the day, Demery Ford stepped to the free-throw line for Berkeley with less than 10 seconds to play and sank the eventual game-winner.

“We had a couple mental breakdowns at the end but this was a great learning experience for our team,” Bishop England head coach Bryan Grevey said. “This won't be the last tough situation we'll be in at the end of a game this season. So hopefully we take something from today that we can use down the road.”

Dillon Corbett scored 16 first-half points to help Bishop England to a two-point halftime advantage. Berkeley claimed the lead in third quarter but a 14-point second half from B.J. Grevey paced Bishop England into overtime.

Corbett finished with 22 points and six rebounds, while Grevey added 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting and pulled down six rebounds. Bishop England shot 44 percent from inside the three-point arc as a team.

“I'm really proud of the way we fought for four quarters today and put ourselves in a position to win the game,” Coach Grevey said. “This experience will help us immeasurably when we get into the meat of region play.”

The Bishops return to the court Jan. 7 at home against Battery Creek (5-2, 2-0) in a showdown for first place of Region VI. //
