Wando varsity wrestling won three different weight classes on way to the Palmetto State Classic tournament championship last weekend at Irmo High School.

Darren Scott won the 106-pound individual title, Alex Cullen the 120-pound title and Ben Crutchfield the 138-pound title. Will Sutler (132), Joey Paragano (145) and Ryan Williams (182) all finished second in their respective classes.

With six wrestlers competing in championship rounds, Wando (12-6) moved into first place in the team standings early Saturday. The Warriors had nine wrestlers finish in the top four of their weight class and finished with 276 total team points, 25 points above second-place Chapin. Socastee finished third, Emerald in fourth.

“Winning this tournament was a great way to start the new year,” Wando head coach Adam Schneider said. “We are starting to get the lineup in order and the wrestlers are improving.”

Scott won his first opening-round match by fall before taking an 11-6 win over Austin Watters (Airport) in the semifinal round and a 9-3 win over D.J. Leonardi (Irmo) in the finals.

Cullen beat Nicholas Qualls (Stratford) 12-1 and Brennan Keys (River Bluff) 8-5 before getting the fall in 3 minutes 28 seconds in the finals against Noah Crumlich (Richland N.E.)

Crutchfield won by fall in the opening round, then topped Kemp Shider (Stratford) 8-6 and Quint Baldwin (River Bluff) 5-2.

Wando opens region play Wednesday at home against Goose Creek at 7 p.m. Stratford, James Island and West Ashley all follow from Region VII in coming weeks.

“This was also a great tune up for the tough schedule we have ahead,” Schneider said. “We'll wrestle all four of our region opponents in the next two and a half weeks and, as defending region champions, we know that we are going to get everybody's best shot.” //
