Tommie Sue Hardin Moorer, “Olie”

  • Tuesday, January 14, 2014

Tommie Sue Moorer, 105, of Sullivan's Island, SC, wife of the late Thaddeus Baker Moorer, died Saturday, January 11 after a brief illness. Tommie, known most fondly as “Olie,” was born October 24, 1908 in Forest City, NC, daughter of the late Rollie Earnest Hardin and Mary Ann Nancy Jane Doggett Hardin. She was a member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder, a life member of Presbyterian Women, and active participant in the Miriam-Naomi Circle.

Tommie grew up in a railroad family, and loved sharing her childhood stories, including hearing Gen. Pershing speak from the back of a troop train, memorizing a poem for a Temperance League Rally, being captain of the high school basketball team, and infamously appearing in the paper after a joy-ride in a Model T that landed her friends and her in a creek. Tommie was studying to be a teacher at Limestone College when she met the love of her life, Thad Moorer. On their wedding trip, they began the tradition of calling one another Ol' Lady and Ol' Man. They raised their twin girls in Summerville, and Ol' Lady became Olie when the grandchildren arrived. In Hartsville, Olie served as Worthy Matron and District Deputy Grand Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and as president of the Civinette Club of Hartsville. Olie was an accomplished cook and seamstress, sewing both her daughters' wedding gowns, and the christening gown that has been worn by all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great granddaughter. She loved poetry and songs, which she delighted in sharing with friends and family from her favorite perch on the porch swing. At 105, Olie could still recite the entire 52-line Edgar Guest poem, “It Takes a Heap o' Livin' in a House t' Make it Home.” Whenever she returned home from traveling, she would plop down on that swing, breathe a sigh of relief and say, “Now, I'm home.”

Olie is survived by her twin daughters, Betty Jane Dillon of Sullivan's Island, SC, and Margaret Anne Malkus of Cambridge, MD; four grandchildren, Debbie Darden (Bruce), Charlotte, NC; Betsy Malkus of Cambridge, MD; Fred Malkus, III of Odenton, MD; Susan Malkus (Phil Brown); eight great-grandchildren, Susanne Rowell (Frank), Thad Darden, Steven Darden, Richard LaPerch (Jess), Stephen LaPerch, Thomas LaPerch, Katie Brown, Maddie Brown; her great-great granddaughter, Haviland Jane Rowell, and numerous nieces and nephews. Olie was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters, and her grandson, Jerry Dillon.

The burial will be held Thursday, January 16, in Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville, SC, at 1:00 pm. The Celebration of Olie's life will be held on Saturday, January 18, at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Sullivan's Island, SC at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Condolences may be made at www.jhenrystuhr.com <http://www.jhenrystuhr.com>. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of SC, 110 Dillon Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307 or Sunrise Presbyterian Church Presbyterian Women P.O. Box 517, Sullivan's Island, SC 29482. The family would like to express deep appreciation to Visiting Angels and Hospice for enabling Olie to live a quality life at home, on the porch.
