Krewe of Charleston kicks off Mardi Gras festivities
Joe and Lisa Rice were named King and Queen of the Krewe of Charleston for 2014 on Jan. 10 at Harborside East. The Charleston Carifest Dancers performed at the Royal Announcement Party. Charleston Carifest Caribbean Carnival will educate and entertain at the Children’s Carnival May 31. Charleston Carifest Family Carnival will be held June 12 - 15, 2014.
Charleston Mardi Gras 2014 is a week-long affair, with parades, art showings, food festival, live music and royal announcements in the Charleston area — all leading up to the Grand Masquerade Ball.
The only Mardi Gras Krewe on the Atlantic Coast, the first ball was held with 500 people in attendance. Organizers are preparing for the fifth-annual week of Carnivale celebrations and Grand Masquerade Ball to celebrate the history and culture of Mardi Gras on the East Coast. The 5th Anniversary Krewe of Charleston Masquerade Ball is Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. Visit www.charlestonmardigras.com for details.
