Charleston Roller Derby hosts kick off party

  • Thursday, January 16, 2014

New Year’s celebrations tend to be overblown, overpriced and disappointingly boring. Redo ringing in 2014 – and do it right this time – at a party with the meanest women on eight wheels.

Join the Lowcountry Highrollers as they kick-start their 2014 season with a Home Team Draft Party on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Tin Roof, 1117 Magnolia Road in West Ashley, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Maybe you’ve met the Ashley Riverdolls, the Holy City Heartbreakers or the Swamp Foxes in past seasons. You might have even sported the royal blue, punk-rock red or stealthy camo to cheer on your favorite skaters. This year, they’re mixing it up by re-drafing all three teams. The sibling rivalry has never been this intense.

Go have a beer, and see how their rosters changed. No ticket required, and no cover charge at the door. There will have fabulous pink and black merchandise available for sale and roller derby footage playing on the big screen.

The Lowcountry Highrollers, recently named a Division 2 league within the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, face their stiffest competition yet this year. They will travel the length of the East Coast for bouts against other internationally-ranked teams. Join them at the draft party, as their season officially begins.

The Lowcountry Highrollers roller derby league is a skater-owned and operated 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization. The league was the first in South Carolina to become a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. The Highrollers’ mission is to promote ‘sportswomanship,’ female empowerment and community consciousness through activities, events and charity involvement.
