Adam Schneider knows the feeling of a region championship team and with just one regular season match remaining, the Wando head wrestling coach can sense his Warriors are close to supremacy.
Wando (24-9) picked up wins over Goose Creek, Cane Bay and knocked off Stratford twice, all in January, to move to the top of Region VII. Now with West Ashley awaiting in the regular season finale Thursday, the Warriors are in prime position to claim their second straight region title.
“The team has developed and are peaking on the mat at the right time of the season,” Schneider said. “This is a result of outstanding leadership from our senior wrestlers, which continues to focus on extending the championship legacy through our depth in each weight class. We were looking for a seamless transition from last season to this one, and hope to do the same next year.”
The Warriors topped Goose Creek 41-22, Stratford 42-20 and Cane Bay 63-12. They won the Charleston County Tournament for the third straight year two weeks ago, finished third in the Battery Creek Duals last week and took third in the Gamecock Duals Sunday.
In the Gamecock Duals, Wando overtook Bluffton, 51-21, in the third-place match to avenge an early-season loss to the Bobcats in the Cane Bay Duals.
“That win was extra special,” Schneider said. “It shows the improvement that has been made through all of their hard work.”
Wando was ranked No. 18 in Class 4A in SCMat.com’s Jan. 10 polls. Sophomore Darren Scott was ranked No. 6 in the 106-pound class, junior Alex Cullen No. 4 in the 120-pound class, and senior Ben Crutchfield No. 4 in the 132-pound class.
“(The team is) in great shape, both physically and mentally, and have the confidence to get the job done.”
West Ashley and Wando meet on the mat at 7 p.m. Thursday at West Ashley High.
