Splash - Sullivan’s Island New Year’s Day

  • Wednesday, January 29, 2014

At Station 22, below clouds, vendors in tents sold burgers and beer, towels and T-shirts as scores made their way along the narrow boardwalk to the beach, where they observed blue lights circling atop white vehicles, and flags with palmetto trees or lone stars anchored in the sand

Meanwhile, flesh-colored polar bears wearing costumes—Big Bird, Batman, Hulk, King Kong—or bikinis anxiously awaited the call

Someone mentioned seeing a coyote from the nearby maritime forest ‘Just another contestant,’ sloshed one well-oiled observer

Suddenly, a horn was heard and bears rushed toward the ocean

Strange sounds sprang forth as bare bones met frosty foam

The bears came running back, some with smiles, others with scoffs, most with chattering choppers

It was a day of celebration, save for a woman in tears wearing a wet wedding dress she never got to use

At closure, the sun took a peek and rain made its own splash
