A look back at the headlines brings mixed emotions. There are numerous things that cause a chuckle.

There were serious events in our nations history that garnered Moultrie News coverage.

Some events were sad, and some great milestones for America.

In essence, the Moultrie News archived the history of East Cooper and its surrounding areas.

Headlines of note:

Dec. 19, 1968 - Miss Nancy Moore to wed Strom Thurmond

Feb. 20, 1969, - Mount Pleasant housewives find ideal hobby

March 20, 1969 - Mrs. Donna Poulnot chosen Woman of the Year

April 3, 1969 - Sgt. Donaldson instrumental in success of Apollo 9

Oct. 13 1969 - Architects plan new high school

Nov. 6, 1969 - Christmas mail to Vietnam sped up

Interesting things were happening in our community in those early years of publication.

For example The Groves neighborhood annexed into the Town of Mount Pleasant in 1968. Back then they called it merged. Mayor G. Magrath Darby Jr. was in favor of the move.

The Island Cinema re-opened on Sullivanís Island that year too. It had been closed for many years. It was located in the theater building at Fort Moultrie.

The theater was open seven days a week except Sunday morning church hours. At the time it was the only cinema in operation east of the Cooper.

And not to be missed was the announcement that Dr. and Mrs. A. V. Boyance hosted Miss Ruth Anne Carter, then a 22 year-old from Columbia who had the distinct title of Miss World Queen of Posture and Physical Fitness.
