Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC announced that five lawyers, M. Dawes Cooke, Jr, B.C. Killough, Randell C. Stoney, Jr., Ernest Lipscomb and William C. Helms, III have been named to the 2014 Edition of Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession. In addition, M. Dawes Cooke, Jr. was selected as 2014 “Lawyer of the Year” for Arbitration in the Charleston-SC area. B. C. Killough is recognized for his work in Corporate Law and Litigation - Intellectual Property. Killough is an Adjunct Professor, teaching Patent Law, at the University of South Carolina School of Law in Columbia, South Carolina. He holds a Martindale-Hubble Preeminent rating, and is a Permanent Member of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judicial Conference. He obtained his mediation certification from the South Carolina Supreme Court Arbitrator and Mediator Certification Board, and he received training from the American Arbitration Association, specifically to assist with patent, trademark and intellectual property disputes. Killough is a contributor to Practical Law Company's South Carolina law summary in the area of Trademark Law and Unfair Competition Law.
Barnwell Whaley Special Counsel Ernest B. Lipscomb III is listed for his work in Trademark Law. Mr. Lipscomb has a preeminent Martindale-Hubbell rating, representing the highest level of professional excellence. He is recognized by both Best Lawyers and Super Lawyers for his work in trademarks, patents and intellectual property law. He is the author of the seminal eleven-volume treatise in the patent field, Lipscomb's Walker on Patents, author of Lipscomb's Patent Claims and has testified as an expert witness in patent cases. He is an adjunct professor, teaching patent law, at the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Randell C. Stoney, Jr. is recognized in the area of Product Liability Litigation – Defendants. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the South Carolina Defense Trial Lawyers Association, and the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), and The American Board of Trial Advocates.

Brewton Hagood, and Alice Paylor have all been chosen by their peers for inclusion in the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in America®. Hagood, who heads the construction practice group at Rosen Hagood, was selected as the Charleston Lawyer of the Year for the second consecutive year for Construction Litigation. He was also honored for his work in construction law and arbitration. He has been awarded an AV Preeminent Rating by the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings and is a member of the American Bar Association Tort and Insurance Practice Section, the Forum on the Construction Industry, and the Law Practice Management Section.
Paylor was recognized for her work in commercial litigation and labor and employment litigation. She is President of the South Carolina Bar and by virtue of her leadership position; she serves on the Bar's Executive Committee and its Board of Governors. Ms. Paylor is a permanent member of the 4th Circuit Judicial Conference and was previously the President of the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association. She is rated as an AV Preeminent attorney by the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings.
