Cario performs Willy Wonka

In January, Cario Middle School grade drama students performed Willy Wonka, Jr. at the Wando Performing Arts Center (Wando PAC), to over 1500 people. Cario's Willy Wonka, Jr. was a fully-staged production with 23 songs, six choreographed numbers, 65 costumes, and several major set changes. Wando Technical theatre students assisted with special effects.

Students auditioned in September and rehearsed throughout first semester. During October and November, cast members performed Willy Wonka musical selections while visiting residents at Mount Pleasant Manor, Sweetgrass Village, Sandpiper Courtyard, Sandpiper Village, Franke home and Somerby retirement communities. In addition, the Oompa Loompas performed at the Cario Holiday Concert.

Leads included Logan Teder (Willy Wonka), Victoria Nathanson (Charlie Bucket), Lizzy Brakefield (Candy Man), and, Chris Trevino (Grandpa Joe). Additional leads, in order of appearance, were Kindred Moore, Brooklyn Cantey, Melanie Streb, Evita Royer, Julia Spencer, Bela Chamberlain, Katie Cook, Grace Cutter, Lauren Pilling, Rasy Groesbeck, Martha Pickens, Tatiana Smalls, Troy Dassing, Lauren Cuppy, Kyle Ouellette, Laney Hill, Sofia Lagares, Grace Oenbrink, Ashlin Noonan, Breanna Wilson, Rowan Burns, Nick Bennis and Kate Wander.

Four ensemble groups – Oompa Loompas, Candy Man Kids, Cooks and Squirrels - performed in Willy Wonka, Jr., including Oompa Loompas: Haley Wynne, Paige Fister, Paisley Hoge, Hensley Timmerman, Adhithi Biawanathan, Shelby Rhodes, Devyn Priest, Kris Andales, Eleanor Oldford, Mary Royce, Tabitha Blevins, Ashleigh Allen, Chloe Putnam and Brianna Evangelist; Candy Man Kids: Kris Andales, Eleanor Oldford, Mary Royce, Tabitha Blevins, Ashleigh Allen, Chloe Putnam and Brianna Evangelist; Cooks: Kris Andales, Katie Cook, Brianna Evangelist and Mary Royce; Squirrels: Rasy Groesbeck, Grace Cutter, Breanna Wilson, Ashlin Noonan, Katie Cook, Lauren Pilling, Tatiana Smalls, Meaghan Mims, Lauren Cuppy, Troy Dassing, Martha Pickens and Rachel Crain.

Also assisting with Cario's Willy Wonka, Jr. production were Cario crew members: Ethan Delfino, Aiden Gomez, Chandler Hawkins, Maggie Packard, Camryn Teder, Ann Webb and Jack Wilson; and, Cario student choreographers: Lizzy Brakefield, Katie Cook, Kindred Moore, Brooklyn Cantey, Julia Spencer, Evita Royer and Melanie Streb.

Technical crew included Wando students: Mary Brown (sound), James Leggett (backstage), Mason Crawford (lights), Michael Dean (spotlight); and, Cario student, Ann Webb (music) under the direction of Mr. Joshua Hasty, Wando Technical Theatre teacher.

Willy Wonka, Jr. was produced by Cario Drama teacher, Joni McLeod, director; Cario Art teacher, Stefani Timmerman, set designer; Karen Klobukowski, stage manager; Jen Gomez, house manager. Donna Croft assisted with costumes.

Willy Wonka, Jr. business sponsors included Lowe's of Mount Pleasant; 4th Annual Charleston Marathon/YEA Grant; Wando Voice Studio; Rodan+Fields Dermatologists; and, PrimeLine IPS.

Cario Drama students will compete in the South Carolina Speech and Theatre (SCSTA) Middle School Festival and Competition in April 2014.
