  • Friday, February 7, 2014

The Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is hosting a Preview Day for prospective high school sophomores and their families on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 401 Railroad Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550. This open house event will provide attendees the opportunity to tour GSSM’s campus and attend information sessions with current students, faculty, and alumni.

To attend a Preview Day, students should register online. The registration deadline for the February 8th Preview Day is Jan. 29.

One of only 12 of its kind in the nation, GSSM is a two-year, public, residential high school for juniors and seniors specializing in the advanced study of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Beyond its distinctive curriculum, GSSM offers unique learning opportunities including the nationally recognized Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI), the Research Experience Scholars Program (RESP) and January Interim. These innovative programs provide students with mentored, graduate-level internships, study abroad experiences and options to explore non-traditional courses. The School is also educating the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders through the BlueCross BlueShield Economics & Finance Institute and the next generation of engineers through the Duke Energy Engineering & Innovation Institute.

GSSM is currently accepting applications from current high school sophomores until February 15, 2014. Online applications are available at www.scgssm.org/apply-now.

GSSM applicants should:

•be current high school sophomores and SC residents

•have taken the PSAT, SAT, ACT or PLAN standardized tests

•have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher

•complete geometry, algebra I and II, English II and one lab science by the end of sophomore year

GSSM is highly selective, taking into consideration courses taken, grades, class rank, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations and extracurricular activities. The school considers not only aptitude, but also proven performance and demonstrated interest in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics courses.
