Wando had 12 wrestlers advance in their respective weight classes, with three first-place finishes, in the Region VII tournament Wednesday at Cane Bay High.
Alex Cullen finished first in the 120-pound class, Ben Crutchfield first in the 132-pound class and Brandon Robinson first at 170 pounds. Crutchfield is a four-time region champion, while Cullen wins his second.
"It feels awesome to know that all that hard work paid off and to have my two other teammates win first also," Crutchfield said. "And to have 12 total wrestlers going to Lower State is a great bonus."
To advance to Lower State, wrestlers had to finish third or better in their weight class. Darren Scott (106) placed second, Rob McAdams (138) third, Joey Paragano (145) third, Tyler Egonut (152) third, Jeremy Petit (160) second, Ryan Williams (182) second, Zola Davis (195) third, Hunter Allen (220) second and Love Scott (285) second.
All will move on to wrestle in the Lower State tournament, beginning Feb. 21 at Beaufort High School.
"It gives us some added momentum and shows everyone that we can go toe to toe with the teams we'll be seeing this weekend," Crutchfield said.
Saturday, Wando will begin competition in the Class 4A state duals, the SCHSL team playoff tournament. Wando is the No. 1 seed out of Region VII and will host Region VIII No. 4 seed Beaufort in the opening match.
