Wando tops Stratford; West Ashley awaits for region title

Wando head coach David Eaton said that Tuesday would be a telling game for his team. Eaton wanted to see how his Warriors responded after their first region loss Friday.

Wando (19-4, 6-1) eased any concern of a slump with a 62-50 win at Stratford to keep its region championship hopes afloat. With one regular season game left for the Warriors, win, and Region VII championship is theirs; lose, and Goose Creek takes the crown, along with a No. 1 seed and home-court advantage in the playoffs.

And who better an opponent to be standing in the Warriors’ way than the rival West Ashley Wildcats?

West Ashley (6-15, 2-5) has struggled to compete this season in the top-heavy Region VII. The Wildcats were embarrassed at home in a 20-point blowout a week ago in the first game of the Wando series. But a win over the Warriors to ruin a championship 20-win season would no doubt be a highlight for the Wildcats this year.

Stratford never stood a chance of an upset Tuesday. Wando exerted its dominance early and coasted to the win. The Warriors allowed Stratford just two field goals in the first quarter while they opened an 11-point lead with two threes from Taylor Majewski.

Stratford made three field goals in the second quarter, but Wando countered with its highest-scoring quarter of the game to take a 16-point lead into the break. Five Warriors scored at least two points in the second quarter, with Andrew Glover, Jamez Rogers and Matt Pegram each scoring at least four.

Stratford trimmed the deficit down to nine through the third quarter, but Amp Moore responded for Wando with seven points in the fourth quarter to help seal the win. Majewski led Wando with 14 points, including four threes. Moore and Rogers both added 11 points, Pegram 10 and Glover eight.

Wando limited Stratford to 29 percent shooting from the field. Demetre Rivers led all scores with 20 points — all in the second half — but shot just 5-23 to get there. Antonio Stinson added 11.

Wando and West Ashley tip off at 8:30 p.m. Friday on senior night at Wando.
