More than 1,400 students competed Dec. 12-15 in the National K-12 Chess Championship. The event was held at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. with chess players from all over the United States.

Joshua and Jacob Lewis, fourth graders at Charles Pinckney Elementary School, took part in the three-day, seven-round tournament. Jacob finished 153rd and Joshua finished 170th in the nation, strong showings for their second event.

Joshua and Jacob are products of the Charles Pinckney Elementary School Chess Team. They are coached by Stephen Welt, a local chess coach, and guided by Ec Setser, a second grade teacher at Laurel Hill Primary School and organizer of the Laurel Hill Primary School and Charles Pinckney Elementary School Chess Clubs.
