Mount Pleasant Police Department Cpl. William Dorfner, School Resource Division, attended a youth summit at Belle Hall Elementary School on Jan. 11 and spoke about civic duty. The summit was organized by Patricia Wright of the Snowden community, in conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

“The overall theme of my talk was personal responsibility and community engagement,” said Cpl. Dorfner. “I encouraged students to do their very best in school in order to contribute to the world around them in a powerful way. We also talked about the importance of public service and serving in the military.”

Other parts of the program included African dance and drums, a reading of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, musical performances by various groups, a presentation from East Cooper Habitat for Humanity on community service, and a civil rights speech by Rev. Arthur Pinckney of Olive Branch AME.
