Kitchen Karma: It’s the cause of the month

When it comes to giving back, the approach is simple for the folks at SOL Mount Pleasant; it's do their part. SOL offers several opportunities to support local organizations, just by eating, drinking and having fun. Each month the owners select a different charity.

Customers simply join them for lunch, dinner or lounging and enjoy that month's signature menu items. It's called Kitchen Karma and $1 from each featured cocktail and signature dish will go to that local charity. “It's contributions from our kitchen to benefit your community cause,” explained David Clark, owner.

The concept of the restaurant, developed by local restaurateurs David Clark, Andy Palmer and Joe Sciortino, is to serve as a neighborhood restaurant for everything from family meals to business lunches, date nights and happy hours.

Clark said all three owners live in Mount Pleasant.

“We are part of the community and right from the get-go we wanted our philosophy to be about more than just using local vendors, suppliers and food. We wanted to be part of the local community and one way to do that was to create Kitchen Karma,” he said. “We wanted to show people that this is what we are about.”

“In addition,” he added, “this was a way to get the customer involved, too.”

“It was more than just writing a check to our favorite charity,” he said.

“Kitchen Karma highlights a menu item and a drink from our fresh margarita list. And we donate a dollar for each menu item sold.”

November and December's featured charity was the Charleston Animal Society. From mid-November through December, they raised over $1,700 for the Charleston Animal Society.

Louie's Kids is the beneficiary of Kitchen Karma through the end of February.

“Kitchen Karma brings awareness to a local charity or group where money stays local,” said Clark. “Some of our customers may never have heard of the group, so we're bringing awareness and showing customers why we're supporting a particular group's efforts. It's a win-win for everyone.”

Locally owned and operated, SOL blends the bold flavors of the Southwest with our own Southern culinary influences.

Other giving opportunities at SOL include SOL Spirit Nights. If you represent a local nonprofit or school, an SOL Spirit Night is just for you. They'll set a date to host your group at the restaurant and then donate 10 percent of your purchases to your organization.
