PCA boys, girls advance to region finals

Palmetto Christian picked up wins in the boys and girls SCISA Class AA Region II tournament Monday, advancing both teams to Tuesday's championship round.

Coming off a first round bye, the Palmetto Christian boys rolled past Calhoun Academy in their first game in almost a week. They'll face No. 2 seed Dorchester Academy Tuesday for the region title. Palmetto Christian has already defeated Dorchester twice this season by a combined 32 points.

The Palmetto Christian Lady Eagles got past No. 2 Holly Hill in a slight upset as the tournament's No. 3 seed. They'll meet No. 1 Thomas Sumter Tuesday for the girls region title. Palmetto Christian dropped both regular season games against Thomas Sumter but by a combined five points.

Palmetto Christian boys 58, Calhoun Academy 35

Chris DeMarco scored a game-high 18 points, while Joe Siegwald, Will Tuchfarber and Sam Iriart each added nine in the Eagles win.

Calhoun stayed within five points of Palmetto Christian in the first half before the Eagles broke the game open with a 38-point second half.

Will Spires scored 16 for Calhoun but no other player was allowed more than five.

Palmetto Christian girls 44, Holly Hill 41

Corey Caulder scored 22 points with eight rebounds, and Lizzie Wilson turned in 14 points, five rebounds as the Lady Eagles' eased by Holly Hill.

Palmetto Christian stretched a four-point halftime lead into six-point advantage headed into the final quarter and had to fend off a late push to earn the second-round win.

The Lady Eagles shot 29 perfect from the field but connected on 11-12 free-throw attempts in the tight contest.
