Lady Eagles win Region II tourney
The Palmetto Christian Lady Eagles captured the SCISA Class AA Region II tournament championship Tuesday with a 32-21 win over Thomas Sumter Academy at Dorchester Academy.
Third time was a charm for the Lady Eagles who avenged two regular season losses to Thomas Sumter. After allowing 48 points in both of the first two meetings, Palmetto Christian allowed just 21 points Tuesday, Thomas Sumterís second-fewest points scored this season.
Corey Caulder scored 19 points with five rebounds, Lizzie Wilson added eight points, and Annie Pascutti grabbed nine rebounds for the Lady Eagles.
After building a five-point lead through the first half, Palmetto Christian limited Thomas Sumter to just two points in the third quarter to break open a 12-point lead headed into the fourth. Caulder was named tournament MVP, Region II Player of the Year, All-Region and All-Tournament. Wilson was also named to the All-Tournament team, while Pascutti earned an All-Region selection.
Palmetto Christian (15-13, 7-3) earns a No. 5 seed in the SCISA Class AA playoffs and will face No. 4 seeded Pee Dee Academy Friday at Wilson Hall.
PCA boys take second
Palmetto Christian almost pulled off a tournament championship sweep as the boys came within a final shot of knocking off Dorchester Academy.
Trailing 45-44 in the closing seconds, Palmetto Christianís final shot attempt just missed. Itís the first game Palmetto Christian has lost to a Region II opponent this season.
J.T. Waters led all scorers with 16 points, five rebounds, four assist and three steals for Palmetto Christian. Joe Siegwald added 10 points, five rebounds, two steals, and Will Tuchfarber scored seven points with five rebounds.
Palmetto Christian held a five-point lead at halftime but was outscored 24-18 in the second half. J.T. Waters and Joe Siegwald were named All-Region II. Waters was also named to the All-Tournament team.
ďOne possession here or there changes the game,Ē Palmetto Christian head coach Brian Stanley said. ďYou donít ever want to lose but hopefully this ends up helping us. Hopefully, it serves as a kind of wakeup call to refocus us for the playoffs.Ē
Palmetto Christian will enter the SCISA Class AA boys state playoffs as the No. 2 seed against Thomas Heyward Saturday at Pinewood Prep.
