Wando rugby upset nationally-ranked No. 17 Greenville, 12-5, Friday in Columbia.

Wando broke inside the Greenville 22-meter line early in the match with a 30-meter driving maul directed by Ryan Springer and Davis Strobel. Springer then set up Kyle Harbin for the score from the corner to take a 5-0 lead.

Greenville threatened later in the half with a deep kick inside the Wando 22-meter line that Andrew Mulvaney ran down and narrowly cleared to prevent the tying try.

Springer added a late try on the last play of the half set up by a chip kick from Harbin after Strobel robbed a Greenville scrum with a steal on their own 22. Springer converted the kick to send Wando into halftime, leading 12-0.

Greenville broke the shutout midway through the second half with a corner score off two quick taps after two Wando penalties.

Wando sealed the match, down two players, as Austin Clark was tackled inside the Greenville 5-meter line. The Warriors were awarded a scrum, which they won to end the match. Daniel Runck was awarded Man of the Match for his scrumming and play in the rucks.

Wando B-team suffered a 15-7 loss to Greenville Friday.

The Warriors dominated the pace of the first half, hammering the ball in Greenville’s end, but missed on several opportunities to score.

Greenville jumped on top, 12-0, in the second half with corner score off a 70-meter breakaway, followed by a second just minutes later.

Wando fought back with a Michael Swift score off of a penalty, but Greenville answered late with their own late penalty kick.

Robert Gardner was awarded Man of the Match for his big night full of taxis and hammers.

Wando returns to the pitch March 7 in the Charlotte Ruggerfest Tournament.
