New lower school building, inaugural kindergarten class, new gym and performing arts space part of Master Plan
On Thursday, March 6, Mason Preparatory School breaks ground on the first phase of its complete campus renovation, and paves the way for the school's first kindergarten class.
Unlocking Our Potential, the school's capital campaign, provides much of the funding for Mason Prep's transformation. Phase I, expected to open in late 2014/early 2015, features a new lower classroom building complete with large, light-filled classrooms for kindergarten through third grade. The building, located at the corner of Bull and Barre Streets, is connected to the existing buildings via a raised walkway.
Mason Prep has long been known for its highly regarded academic program, and Unlocking Our Potential creates new athletic and arts opportunities for Mason Prep students. It also adds Mason Prep's first kindergarten classes. Last month, Mason Prep began accepting kindergarten students for the 2014-2015 year; nearly all 36 spots have been filled.
Phase II of Mason Prep's campus transformation builds a new student activities center on the southwest corner of campus and transforms the existing gym into a multi-purpose room that will be used as a lunchroom, performance space, and home base for the after-school program. It also reconfigures existing classrooms into larger spaces built for 21st-century learning and creates a new, advanced science classroom and a new art room.
The new master plan is the result of a campus architectural survey and a campaign planning study that engaged families and school supporters. “After months of listening and planning, our school is about to embark on a project which will transform Mason Prep as we know it,” states Erik Kreutner, Head of School.
Mason Prep, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary during the next school year, was founded in 1964 by Nancy Hawk in her home at 1 Meeting Street. In 1967, the school moved to its permanent campus located on Halsey Boulevard downtown. The construction made possible by the Unlocking Our Potential campaign marks the first large-scale renovations to the school since the creation of the Nancy D. Hawk Library Media Center in 2000.
The Charleston-based architectural firm of Goff D'Antonio Associates designed the campus plan and Trident Construction is the general contractor. The Winkler Group, a full-service fundraising firm located in Mount Pleasant, serves as capital campaign counsel.
