Beer fans and aspiring brewers can learn from the pros at Edmund’s Oast.

Charleston's newest addition to the restaurant scene, Edmund's Oast (1081 Morrison Dr.), will host a quarterly Beer School beginning in early March. Brandon Plyler, manager at the Charleston Beer Exchange and a certified Cicerone, will be heading a series of classes covering topics such as “History of the IPA Part 1: The Old World,” “History of the IPA Part 2: The New World” and “How to Pair Beer and Cheese.” Specifically, attendees will learn the following:

– Class 1: Explore the mainstay styles of beer the Trappist Abbey's are known for, try some world class examples of the beers produced by Trappist Monks and those produced by secular breweries.

– Class 2: Beer and cheese, a nice range of cheeses that span the gamut of texture and milk used. Taste cheese with beer's that are versatile and pair well.

– Class 3: Story of IPA, Old World, explain the origins of IPA, Pale Ale, by telling the story in reverse and focusing of British Brewed Examples.

– Class 4: Story of IPA, New World, explore New World expressions of IPA and how the philosophy of dumping a ton of hops into a recipe has become so popular.

Starting March 10, the series will run each Monday that month. Classes will be held on the outside patio at the restaurant. Cost is $35 per person per class or $130 for the entire four weeks (a $10 savings) and the average class will run an hour and a half.

“Beer fans of any knowledge level will enjoy these interactive classes,” stated Beverage Director Cameron Read. “We want people to walk away with a better understanding of the history behind their favorite beer, the flavors and ingredients to look for in a beer and food pairing, and how they can take this knowledge and use it in their day to day.”
