ECMCS students explore the world of commerce

Jacy Fletcher interned at the Sweetgrass Ace Hardware.

For the sixth consecutive year, 6th and 7th grade students at East Cooper Montessori Charter School (ECMCS) have ventured into the local business community for a week of education on the basics of running a business. This is not the traditional job shadowing where a student follows a professional. ECMCS students get down and dirty in their respective professions. They are expected to perform jobs while on site and then write a thesis on the experience.

Laura Cicarelli interned in the marketing department of the College of Charleston where one of her activities was to summarize multiple articles for publication in a magazine.

Jacy Fletcher gardened, cleaned, stocked, organized and operated the cash register while working at the Sweetgrass Ace Hardware. “I think I did almost every job there,” she said.

Jacob Ericksen sorted diamonds, engraved jewelry and organized the stock room for the family-owned jewelry store, Joint Venture. Ellen Rickenbaker, owner of Joint Venture, commented, “It was interesting to see our world through Jacob's eyes. Those tasks we considered rote were of most interest to him.”

Caitlin Maher taught workouts and designed workout sessions for clients during her week at Next Level Fitness.

The ice and snow interrupted some of the internships, but the students persevered!
