A different kind of ballet performance returns

  • Monday, March 10, 2014

The Robert Ivey Ballet Company and Annex are teaming up with the Charleston County School of the Arts (SOA) Orchestra and local visual artists for the third annual multidisciplinary arts performance “Fascinations 3.0.” This year the audience will witness an even more significant transformation – that of the Robert Ivey Ballet Company into “Charleston City Ballet,” to become Charleston's own ballet company, continuing to provide a permanent home for the open arts platform that “Fascinations” has brought to life for three years.

When homegrown musicians and dancers share the stage with emerging local artists, the result is nothing short of a sensory feast. Five musical pieces will be paired with original choreography and custom artwork to create a mixed repertoire sure to satisfy the appetites of art lovers of all tastes.

Earning an “Excellent” rating on TripAdvisor 2013, one reviewer said of Fascinations 2.0, “It is just that – fascinating! A masterful blend of live music, dance and visual arts provides an evening of enthralling entertainment. In keeping with the European tradition, the orchestra is on stage with the dancers, not tucked away out of sight. While one would think it might be distracting, it actually brings even more energy to what is already a powerful performance.”

In Fascinations 3.0, dancers from the Robert Ivey Ballet Company and Annex will perform classical and neoclassical ballet with a splash of modern dance for good measure. Directed by Michael and Olga Wise, dancers will perform en corps, in pas de deux and in solos.

The SOA Orchestra will be directed by Dr. Christopher Selby, featuring selections from Dvorak's “Symphony No. 8,” Bizet's “L'Arlesienne” Suite #2, Tchaikovsky's “Symphony No. 5,” Corigliano's “Voyage” and Glinka's Overture to “Russlan und Ludmilla.” Before each piece, an introductory video will show how the collaborators achieved synthesis of their art forms.

Shows begin at 8 p.m. at Sottile Theatre, 66 George St., Charleston, S.C. Tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets or at the door one hour before show time.
