Wando baseball picks up win at Comporium tourney

Wando baseball opened the 2014 season with a win and two losses in this weekend’s Comporium Tournament at Gilbert High School.

Wando (1-2) pulled off a seventh-inning win over Byrnes in Saturday’s opener, before falling to Gilbert and Spartanburg on Sunday.

Wando 2, Byrnes 1

With one out and the game tied in the the seventh inning, Oliver Hill drove a sacrifice fly into center field to score Owen Ravenel and give Wando a 2-1 opening day win Saturday.

Jeff Gottesman earned the win for Wando, allowing two hits and one earned run over seven innings while striking out eight and walking two.

Ravenel helped Wando get on the board in the second inning, reaching on an infield error with two outs while Barrett Walton scored from third.

Wando gave the run back in the top of the seventh with an error at the plate to allow Mason Streater to tie the game for Byrnes.

Down one out in the seventh, Ravenel walked, and Payton Muller and Trevor Pederson hit back-to-back singles to set Hill up for the game-winner.

Walton finished the day 2-3 with a run scored, Hill 1-3 with an RBI, and Pedersen 1-4.

Gilbert 8, Wando 4

Wando rang up nine hits but left six runners stranded in an 8-4 loss to Gilbert Sunday.

Ethan Keane took the loss for Wando, allowing three earned runs off two hits and a walk in one inning.

Wando jumped on top of a couple Gilbert errors early, reeling off three runs with two outs in the first inning. Harrison Smith scored from second while Kep Brown reached on an outfield error. Brown then scored off another Gilbert outfield error while Noah LoCascio reached third. Walton drove in LoCascio in the next at-bat to put Wando on top 3-0.

Caleb Watkins got two back for Gilbert in the bottom frame with a two-run double to center. Gilbert scored two more runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and another in the sixth.

LoCascio drove in Brown in the top of the fifth to score Wando’s only other run. Smith finished 2-4 with a run scored, while LoCascio and Walton both went 1-3 with an RBI.

Spartanburg 9, Wando 6

Wando wrapped up the weekend with a 9-6 loss to Spartanburg, giving up eight runs through the first three innings.

Brown sparked a five-run rally for Wando in the top of the first with a two-run homerun over the leftfield wall. Ravenel singled to left to drive in Gervais DuPre, and Hogan Kelly followed with a single to right to score Walton and Ravenel.

Spartanburg scored four runs in the bottom frame with two outs, including a two-run triple by Banks Wise.

Smith singled to center to score Pedersen in the top of the fourth to pull Wando within two runs of Spartanburg. But the Warriors managed just one more hit the rest of the day.

Smith suffered the loss for Wando, giving up three hits, eight runs, one earned through three innings while striking out five and walking four.

Brown hit 2-4 with a homerun, a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Smith finished 1-4 with an RBI and a walk.
