Cario artists receive top honors in 2013

These Cario students all received awards for artistic acheivement this past year. PROVIDED

Thomas Cario Middle School Art students received top honors and 75 awards, including five Best in Shows, this year in the following state and local competitions: Quest, Federal Jr. Duck Stamp, Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, SCDNR Reel Art, Coastal Fair Youth Art Exhibition, S.T.E.M., Southeastern Wildlife Photo/Poetry and Festival of Lights.

“We are very proud of these students,” said Stefani Timmerman, Cario Visual Arts Instructor, NBCT. “They have earned the highest number of awards in their divisions in every competition so far. They work tremendously hard.”

Listed are the winners and the competitions in which they competed:

Trident Tech’s Academic Competition Quest 2014 Visual Arts Level l and ll

Ino Liu, Marissa Coll,GiGi Swafford and Sabrina Franco received 1st & 2nd places.

Federal Junior Duck Stamp 2014 (FJDS)

Out of more than 900 S.C. student entries, Cario placed 21 entries and received another state championship.

Rose Holstien, 1st Best in Show, is the second Cario student to represent S.C. in national competition. Marissa Coll received 3rd Best in Show. Other student FJDS awards include Chloe Smith, Lexi D’Angelo, Samantha Castiller, Eva Chillura, Kaine Folsch, Ino Liu, Merrit Reddin. Samantha Bost, Riley Hogarty, GiGi Swafford, Emma Smith, Anna Rae Hammes, Noah Barnhart, Madison Jung, Sydney Neff, Olivia Wander, Tanner Veatch, Jordan Krivohlavek and Caleb Jackson.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2014

Forty percent of the 255,000 artworks entered nationally received honors in Scholastic. Cario placing 21 of those works. Gold Key winners Olivia Laskow and Madison Jung will go to nationals this month. Silver Key Winners include Gigi Swafford and Emma Smith. Honorable Mentions include Madison Jung, Emma Smith, Anna Rae Hammes, Daniel Jacobs, Emma Lang, Olivia Laskow, Haleigh Martin, Sydney Neff, Olivia Laskow, Emily Rapach, Emily Roudebush, Joseph Sabados, Caitlyn Van Meulebroecke and Drew Whitman.

2014 South Carolina Department of Natural Resources REEL ART Competition

11 Cario entries out of 1,254 entries in S.C. placed in REEL Art. For the second time, “Chief’s Choice” was once again awarded to a Cario student, Samantha Bost. Placing 1st-3rd are Samantha Castiller, Ben Massar, Alexa D’Angelo and Gigi Swafford. Honorable Mentions include Caleb Jackson, Gabrielle Slye, Emily Rapach, Joseph Sabados, Ana White and Marissa Coll.

Southeastern Wildlife Photography/Poetry Competition

Emma Smith took 1st place in poetry. Photo winners 1st- 3rd include Savannah McCants, Emily Rapach and Drew Whitman.

Charleston Science Technology Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M. Art Competition)

Drew Whitman won 1st prize.

Coastal Carolina Fair/Charleston Artist Guild Youth Art Competition

Ino Liu is the third consecutive Cario student to receive “Best in Show: K-12” in this event. Judges Awards include Riley Hogarty, Olivia Wander, Daniel Jacobs and Emma Smith. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners include Gigi Swafford, Sydney Neff, Olivia Shaw, Caleb Jackson and Kaine Folsch.
