Jamie Renneker is starting to gain some attention for his sailing abilities.

At 14 years old, the eighth-grader placed third in the 2013 South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA) sailing series.

This SAYRA is comprised of some of the top yacht clubs of North Carolina, South Carolina and part of Georgia.

The sailors were required to sail at least one saltwater and one freshwater regatta to show their versatility and talent in different waters. Renneker's results were based on his top four finishes from 12 regattas.

Sailing out of the local Hobcaw Yacht Club, Renneker flourished in larger races. Some of his top finishes came in competitions featuring nearly 200 sailors from around the Southeast.

Renneker believes in the old adage, “practice makes perfect.” Throughout the week, he can be found on the water practicing as much as possible, even in the cold and rain at times. He began sailing at just eight years old but only started to take sailing seriously in the past two years, dedicating most of his time to the craft.

This year, Renneker will compete nationally at United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) events and has qualified for the USODA team trials in Stamford, Conn. in May.
