Hasty Point Plantation on the Pee Dee River in Georgetown, S.C.

This is no ordinary meeting... in fact it is BYOK (bring your own kayak!)

You are cordially invited to spend a day exploring the beauty of Hasty Point Plantation and to participate in our 2014 Climate Change Symposium.

The day will include guided walks through spectacular longleaf pine forest and time to explore the Pee Dee River from the Hasty Point dock.

In addition, we have some dynamic guests coming to share with us the most current information on the impacts of climate change on our coastal national wildlife refuges and forest as well as our coastal communities. We assure you this will not be the “same old discussion.” Our speakers will do their best to bring the impacts of this daunting issue, and the actions needed to effect change, to a very real and local level.

– 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Presentations: Richard Devoe, Executive Director S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and Dr. Elizabeth Fly, Coastal Climate Extension Specialist S.C. Sea Grant Consortium, “Our Communities Adapting to a Changing Climate and Coastline;” Dr. Maria Whitehead, Project Director for the Nature Conservancy, “Protecting our Natural Landscapes in a Changing Climate;” Hamilton Davis, Director of Climate and Energy for the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League “South Carolina's Clean Energy Future.”

– 12:30 p.m., Luncheon and business meeting, including election of new board members. We have some very exciting things happening in the SEWEE Association in 2014 and we are looking forward to sharing all the news with you.

Jennie Moore Elementary School Open House

Jennie Moore Elementary School, an East Cooper Magnet School for the Creative Arts, will host an Open House on Tuesday, April 1 at 6 p.m. The event is designed for parents who will have a student in kindergarten during the 2014-2015 school year. Willie James Atkinson

Passionate and dynamic artist Willie James Atkinson grew up interested in music, particularly the country genre. When he received his first guitar at age 12, he would play non-stop with his family and friends. Even upon joining the military, he would play encouraging songs for the troops when they were going through a hard time. His deep, evocative voice and moving country rhythms take one on an unforgettable spiritual journey.

Come and join him in an inspiring musical event as he will be performing and having a book/CD signing at the Ladles Homemade Soups in 1164 Basketweave Drive, Mount Pleasant, S.C., on March 15 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Turtle Team Youth Education and Interactive Workshop

Saturday, May 10

Children will learn the positive impact they can make on nesting, hatching and survival of loggerhead turtles. The loggerhead turtle is a treasured asset and the workshop will include six interactive stations designed to teach participants about the early stages of sea turtles, different species of turtles and threats to their survival. Ages 10 and under, Isle of Palms Front beach at VFW. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required at loggerheadlessons@gmail.com.

Tricounty Family Ministries

Tricounty Family Ministries is pleased to announce a partnership with the Charleston RiverDogs “Dogs with a Cause!” Monday, April 7, at 7:05 p.m., the Charleston RiverDogs will hold their Home Opener at the Joe Riley Stadium and have set aside this game to raise awareness and funds for Tricounty Family Ministries as we work to help families in a pickle.

Volunteers needed!

Wando High School will be testing all students in their second year in high school with the S.C. exit exam (HSAP) on April 1-3. They are in desperate need for members of the community to volunteer and serve as testing monitors during those days. “Shifts” would be from 8:30 a.m. to noon on any day or all three days.

Charleston Sail and Power Squadron

On Saturday, April 8, the Charleston Sail and Power Squadron will offer to the public a basic training class known as America's Boating Course. It is approved by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and students who pass the final exam will receive a DNR Boater Education Certificate.

The course is free for ages 12 to 18. Adults pay a nominal fee that covers course materials. The day-long class will be taught at the CSPS headquarters at 1376 Orange Grove Road in West Ashley.

Stamp Collectors

WHAT: Anyone, male or female, youth or elders, who are interested in stamp collecting and/or willing to exploring the hobby, is invited.

WHEN: The third Thursday of each month from 7:30-9 p.m.

DETAILS: You do not need to be a professional - just have an interest in stamp collecting, either U.S.or foreign postage stamps. The group is a small and easy-going group that engages in discussing the hobby, exchanges duplicate stamps or helping new club members to get started in the hobby. There is no charge to join or to belong. Come as you are able and get to recognize the excitement and the educational value of the hobby which is shared by thousands.
