The first one-stop supply shop for the Lowcountry brew-at-home enthusiast –– Yeast – Everything Homebrew –– opened its doors on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. at 557 Belle Station Blvd., Mount Pleasant.
The shop offers brewing equipment, supplies, kits and ingredients that include a selection of fresh malts, grains, hops and yeast. The shop also provides support through demonstrations and advice for novices seeking to start in the craft.
Peter Kinslow, a Mount Pleasant resident and proprietor of Yeast – Everything Homebrew, had been homebrewing for years but stopped once he moved to the area due to the lack of local resources.
“After 25 years in the IT business, a layoff sparked me to renew my love of homebrewing and to explore other business opportunities,” said Kinslow. “The craft beer scene has exploded in Charleston over the last five years and it's only natural that the homebrewing hobbyist has grown as well. It's really the perfect time for a dedicated homebrew supply shop here in the Lowcountry.”
A library featuring Kinslow's personal collection of homebrewing books will be available in-house for customers to browse for reference and inspiration. Once up and running, Kinslow plans to hold special events and offer classes at the shop for all styles of homebrewing.
According to the American Homebrewers Association, more than one million people brew their own beer at home in the United States. Mount Pleasant is the perfect location for a dedicated supply shop as the Holy City recently landed in the top 20 on Travel and Leisure's 2013 list of “America's Best Beer Cities.”
The shop is located in the Belle Station Shopping Center off of Long Point Road behind Sonic in Mount Pleasant and can be reached at 843-971-7122. Normal business hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The shop is closed on Wednesdays.

Inez Tenenbaum joins Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough
Inez Tenenbaum, President Barack Obama's choice to lead the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) since 2009, joined the law firm of Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough.
Ms. Tenenbaum, who is credited with transforming the CPSC during her tenure, will work with the law firm's Product Safety, Risk Prevention and Regulatory Practice group, where she will advise clients on regulatory matters, including risk assessment and management, regulatory oversight, product reporting, recalls, and litigation. Ms. Tenenbaum oversaw implementation of Congress' 2008 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act during her tenure and will advise clients on its provisions, particularly relating to product testing and certification requirements.
“I am forever grateful for the opportunity to serve in President Obama's administration in the Consumer Product Safety Commission,” Ms. Tenenbaum said. “I look forward to working with the private sector in understanding consumer product regulations.”
In June 2009, Ms. Tenenbaum was nominated and sworn in as head of the CPSC after the agency had been without a chair for three years. She immediately established a leadership philosophy aimed at making the agency more accessible and transparent, making education and advocacy a priority, and being firm, but fair, in enforcing safety laws and working to keep unsafe products out of the hands of consumers. Under her leadership the CPSC created the Office of Education, Global Outreach and Small Business Ombudsman to coordinate and provide outreach to various domestic and international stakeholders, including manufacturers, retailers, resellers, small businesses and foreign governments.
She has overseen the completion of more than 50 rules since the adoption of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act and expanded CPSC's marketplace surveillance program, revamped and increased the staffing level of the Office of Import Surveillance, and strengthened the partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in order to detect and detain a greater number of potentially dangerous products before they reach consumers. She travelled across the United States and to many other countries to meet with regulators and take safety to the source of domestically and foreign made consumer products.
“Inez brings considerable experience to our products group and will be able to guide clients through many complicated matters involving product safety,” said Managing Partner Jim Lehman. “We look forward to her joining the firm and introducing her to our clients.”
Nelson Mullins represents some of the nation's Fortune 500 manufacturers in compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, the Consumer Product Safety Act, and the associated rules and regulations implemented by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Attorneys evaluate products – with experience ranging from children's products to furniture to appliances – to ensure compliance and assess and advise manufacturers regarding product safety crises, product safety reporting issues, government investigations, corrective action plans, and voluntary and involuntary recalls, including the CPSC's Fast Track Product Recall Program.
A former South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Ms. Tenenbaum also will provide support to EducationCounsel LLC, Nelson Mullins's education affiliate that was cofounded in 2008 by former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley, a partner in the law firm. EducationCounsel is a mission-based education consulting firm that combines experience in policy, strategy, law and advocacy to significantly close achievement gaps and improve student outcomes from birth to post-secondary education throughout the United States. EducationCounsel's clients include many of the nation's leading nonprofits, foundations, state education agencies, school districts and higher education institutions.
“Inez had an exemplary tenure as Superintendent of Education in South Carolina and is a true leader in Washington in President Obama's administration,” Secretary Riley said. “She is a talented lawyer who has a special concern for children – their education, their health and their safety. During Ms. Tenenbaum's tenure as S.C. Superintendent of Education from 1998-2007, the S.C. General Assembly approved a $750 million school bill for K-12 school construction and renovation. At the end of her tenure in 2007, five independent national studies indicated that South Carolina's standards for student academic proficiency under No Child Left Behind were among the most rigorous in the nation. The 2007 national report card “Quality Counts” published by EducationWeek ranked South Carolina No. 1 in the nation in academic standards, assessment and accountability.
The law firm is also home to former Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins, who served as Speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives during Ms. Tenenbaum's tenure as Superintendent of Education. “Inez and I have had a wonderful working relationship in the past. Glasspro's Danny Kale named “World's Best Auto Glass Technician”
Danny Kale, manager of Glasspro's Summerville auto glass center, recently earned the title of “World's Best Auto Glass Technician” at the 8th Annual International Auto Glass Technician Olympics held in Tampa, Fla. Competitors from all over the world were judged on 10 different criteria, including vehicle inspection, professionalism, proper equipment and tool usage, windshield removal and installation technique, and customer service skills.
Mr. Kale has worked in the glass industry for more than 15 years and credited Glasspro's extensive training with helping him win the gold medal against the best auto glass technicians in the world. Each technician had two hours to select the appropriate tools, prepare their vehicle, cut out the windshield and put it back in without breaking it, properly explain each step and correctly perform post-installation and clean-up procedures.
The annual international competition is open to any auto glass technician with at least one year of experience in a bona fide operating auto glass company. Technicians must follow the current Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standards (AGRSS) to compete. In addition to bragging rights as the “World's Best Auto Glass Technician,” Mr. Kale also received $10,000, along with a gold medal and trophy, as the first-place winner.
According to Mr. Kale, “Preparation, practice and a great mentor helped me compete at my best, and I feel very fortunate to be named the winner against such a strong field of auto glass technicians from around the world.”
Glasspro President Paul Heinauer added, “Danny is our fifth Glasspro auto glass technician to win national and international competitions. All of us at Glasspro are extremely proud of our newest champion and congratulate Danny on this fantastic accomplishment.”
