Undefeated Wando sits atop the Rugby South Carolina standings with one match to play in the regular season.
Wando (6-0) wrapped up its home slate with a 39-0 win over Aiken Friday at Cario Middle in Mount Pleasant. The Warriors travel to defending state champion Chapin (4-0-2) this Friday with the No. 1 playoff seed and a first-round home playoff match on the line.
Senior Davis Strobel led Wando against Aiken with three tries. Jon Cummins added two tries and Kyle Harbin one.
The Warriors started the match slow, but head coach Tod Shepherd commended his team’s second-half play.
“Nick Hamlin was a threat every time he touched the ball, while Austin Clark and Sean Kiernan’s defensive mastery shut down any chance that Aiken’s outside attack would score ...
“Andrew Mulvany showed he has speed to burn. We just need to open a couple more holes for him to score. Ryan Springer’s passing and box kicks were lethal all game long ...
“I was very impressed with our second rows and back row. Both Daniel Runck and Riggs Law were rucking machines. Matt Evangelista and Micah Stewart were taxi maniacs ... The front row of Garrett Leaird and Brandon Behringer were monsters in the scrums and lineouts. It was a true team effort.”
Wando B-team (3-1-1) defeated Irmo, 22-15, Friday and is second in the Rugby S.C. Division II standings.
