Brittany Heri scored three second-half goals to propel Wando past Fort Dorchester, 4-0, Tuesday at Wando Stadium in Mount Pleasant.
Wando (6-0) struggled to find its rhythm early against an upset-minded Fort Dorchester squad. After a halftime pep talk from head coach Shannon Champ, the Lady Warriors refocused and came out firing in the second half.
“Fort Dorchester played very, very well in the first half with a lot of energy, a lot of intensity and a lot of determination,” Champ said. “I think we definitely responded in the last 40 minutes.”
Heri broke up the scoreless game almost immediately with a goal into the top left corner of the net in the 41st minute. She added a second in the 57th minute on a breakaway with a quick move past the goalkeeper, and completed the hat trick in the 77th minute.
“Brittany stepped up with some clutch goals when we needed them,” Champ said. “She has great athleticism and great speed so we rely on her for a lot those one-on-ones to goal.”
Allie Winglosky added a fourth goal in the 79th minute with a header off a cross from Hannah Betfort to cap the second-half surge.
Fort Dorchester managed just three shots on goal in the second half against the Warriors defense, all of which goalkeeper Logan Nelson denied. Nelson picked up her sixth shutout of the season.
“I was very pleased with the second 40 minutes, it's the first 40 that we have to work on,” Champ said. “But I guess 4-0 isn't a bad result when you play only half the game.”
Wando travels to Hilton Head Thursday to face the Seahawks at 7 p.m.
