Share the gift of reading

Are you enthusiastic about reading? An advocate for literacy? Good with children?

If you’re still reading this, please consider becoming a 2014 summer reading volunteer at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library. We are looking for volunteers, ages 18 and over, who can commit to short shifts (of up to 2.5 hours) between 10 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from June 1 – August 15. Monday-Thursday shifts are especially desired, but if you are available only on Fridays or Saturdays, we won’t turn you away!

“By the end of 6th grade, kids who do not read over the summer can be as much as two years behind their peers,” says Pam Cadden, Children’s Services Coordinator for the Charleston County Library. “Participation in a summer reading program can help children retain and enrich their reading skills.

The public library provides an opportunity to make reading fun throughout the summer. When reading is fun, children are more likely to do it.

They develop life-long reading habits and improve their literacy skills.”

Mount Pleasant Regional is the highest circulating branch in the Charleston County Library system.

During the summer, children’s librarians strive to provide excellent programs, recommend books for kids and caregivers, passionately promote summer reading, and cheer for children who complete their summer reading goals.

You may wonder, “How can I help with summer reading?”

We need YOU to help us cheer for our summer reading champions.

Summer reading volunteers will help children’s librarians explain the summer reading program and hand out reading logs. They will also assist with clapping, cheering and handing out prizes as kids return to the library after meeting summer reading goals.

Volunteers will help to show Mount Pleasant children that our community is proud of them.

Please visit the children’s desk, email mcqueenj@ccpl.org, or call Jen McQueen at 843-849-6161 if you are one of the enthusiastic volunteers our branch seeks for the 2014 Fizz Boom Read summer reading program. Training for summer reading volunteers will be schedule during the week of May 19.
