Evans' one-hit shutout leads Wando past Stratford

  • Thursday, March 27, 2014

Wando right-hander Mark Evans gave up just one hit as the Warriors topped Stratford, 4-0, Wednesday at Warrior Field in Mount Pleasant.

Evans struck out five and walked two in the seven-inning complete game shutout.

Barrett Walton and Harrison Smith led Wando (6-2, 2-1) at the plate, both hitting 1 for 3 with an RBI double.

Smith broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning, driving a double into left field to score Oliver Hill. Smith scored in the next at-bat off an outfield error. Two batters later, Walton lined another double into left to bring home Kep Brown and open a three-run lead.

Hill added a fourth run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to score Andrew Lee.

The win helps Wando keep pace with West Ashley and Goose Creek atop Region VII. Friday, the Warriors travel to Stratford with an opportunity to complete the three-game season sweep of the Knights.
