Love the outdoors? Mark your calendar for a full-blown celebration of Lowcountry outdoor activities. James Island County Park hosts the East Coast Paddlesports and Outdoor Festival Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13.
The festival formally known just as a paddler's paradise is expanding to include family activities, entertainment and numerous outdoor sports. In addition to the annual showcase of paddle sports enthusiasts, vendors and classes, the event has become a broad-ranging festival that now offers a multitude of outdoor sports plus live music, exciting demos and competitions, and food and beverages.
Start the weekend off right with an evening concert. Capping off the first day of the festival will be a live concert with local favorite Sol Driven Train on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. Sol Driven Train blends American influences with Afro-Caribbean rhythms through a talented five-piece, multi-instrumental group featuring horns, strings and percussion. Bring chairs or a blanket and settle in for great music, with plenty of food and beverages for sale. Admission is $10, and concert-goers will receive a discount on the festival's “Try It” pass for Saturday or Sunday. Saturday night, festival-goers can enjoy live bluegrass performed by Flatt City.
Come back to James Island County Park throughout the weekend to try your hand at outdoor activities like slacklining, climbing, archery, a mountain bike obstacle course, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and more. The “Try It Zone” gives visitors the opportunity to test their skills at a variety of activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day for just $10 per person. Plus, whether you're spectating or choosing to participate, the weekend features several exciting competitions like an SUP race, a mountain bike race and a disc golf tournament.
While you're there, don't forget to explore the East Coast's premier exhibition of kayaking and canoeing programs, vendors and activities. From hands-on classes with world-renowned paddling instructors to a kids' cardboard canoe race, there is something for everyone. Festival goers can choose to attend one class, a couple of classes, or sign up for a full weekend of events and programs.
