TTC’s Clemente Players presents Seussodyssey

  • Friday, April 4, 2014

Trident Technical College's Clemente Players will present “Seussodyssey” by Don Zolidis on April 4-6 at Sterett Hall on the old naval base in North Charleston. All proceeds from the production will go to the support of the Charleston Clemente Project at TTC, which offers free college-level courses to disadvantaged people in the Charleston area.

The play retells the ancient story of Odysseus's 20-year journey, complete with monsters, as if told by Dr. Seuss. “It tells the ancient hero story of perseverance and bravery in a style all ages can enjoy,” said the director, Dr. Sharon V. Willis. “This is an artist's piece, but captures the simplicity and innocence of a child's story well-rendered.”

The choreography for the production is by Orange Grove Dance Company of New York City and is “sensational” according to Willis. John Thomas, an emerging singer-composer in the Charleston area and of Arboreal Mind Productions, has composed music for Odysseus's crew and several scenes in the play. “It's unexpected, experimental and at times organic,” said Willis. “The cast loves the music and has thoroughly been challenged in moving to it with Orange Grove's choreography.”

The set and costumes are designed by local artists Leslie Brewer and Courtney Hawkins, both TTC alumni. The technical director, David Spears, a TTC alumnus, supervised the building of the whimsical visions of Brewer and Hawkins. The show will also showcase local artist Phillip Hyman's sculptural work of two 12-foot puppets created for Clemente Players and operated by three puppeteers.

The show dates are Friday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 5 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 6 at 3 p.m. The Clemente Players and the City of North Charleston are providing 1,000 tickets to underprivileged children in the area. Advance tickets for the general public are $17. A special student advance rate of $10 is available for the Saturday matinee.
