Finally, a reason to shut down the Ravenel Bridge that everyone can get behind.

Every spring, runners from all over the world converge upon the Lowcountry to take part in the Cooper River Bridge Run.

Almost 40,000 runners, walkers and rollers made the 6.2-mile hike from Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston in what has become the seventh-largest race in the country. Coming in first place and bringing home the $10,000 grand prize was Birhan Nebebew of Ethiopia with a blistering time of 28:38.70. Alexandre DuPont was the winner of the wheelchair division, clocking in at an amazing 25:20.00. The top local finisher was Porter-Gaud senior Brent Demarest. The winner of the Newberry Award for best time in the Tri-county area was Michael Banks.

This year’s event was made possible by the efforts of more than 3,600 volunteers and law enforcement personnel who all worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and well-organized run. Correction: An earlier version failed to list the Newberry Award winner.
