Karen Felder, principal of Jennie Moore Elementary School, has been selected as the Outstanding Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Parent Teacher Association. Felder has been the principal at Jennie Moore since July 2004 and has worked in the education community for 33 years.
It is clear that Felder’s respect for parental involvement goes beyond the average principal-parent relationship. She has an open-door policy for staff and parents and has worked hard to create a school known for its parental involvement and community support.
Principal Felder makes it clear that parent volunteers are her most valuable asset and encourages parents to visit with their children during lunch, serve as guest readers in the classrooms, and contribute snacks and treats for school functions and celebrations.
Principal Felder believes that “There is no stronger advocate for the education and well-being of a child than his or her parents.”
This support has led to innovative programs such as Fitness Fridays, Taste-it Tuesdays, Reflections art competitions and the iBeam mentor programs.
Each of these programs works toward the development of more well-rounded students and are 100 percent led by parent and community volunteers.
“It was an honor to have my PTA nominate me for this award,” said Mrs. Felder.
“It is nice to be recognized for my commitment to having a positive relationship and collaborate working partnership with the PTA.”
