Wando basketball was honored by the S.C. State House of Representatives Wednesday in Columbia with a resolution celebrating its 2014 championship season.
The Class AAAA state champions were presented with a framed version of the bill on the floor of the State House. Later in the afternoon, former South Carolina Gamecocks defensive lineman and future NFL top pick Jadeveon Clowney joined the Warriors for lunch to congratulate them on their season.
Bill H.5006 states,
ďA House resolution to recognize and honor the Wando High School boys varsity basketball team, coaches and school officials for an outstanding season and to congratulate them for winning the 2014 Class AAAA state championship title.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Wando High School boys varsity basketball team of Charleston County took top honors at the state competition at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia on Friday, March 7, 2014; and
Whereas, young and optimistic, Head Coach David Eaton motivated his Warriors at the beginning of the season to overcome their lack of preseason ranking, and he inspired them with a goal that Wando High basketball team had never accomplished: winning a state championship; and
Whereas, to the delight of their fans, the Wando Warriors defeated the Hillcrest High School Rams 65-50 to carry home the first boys basketball state championship title in the schoolís history; and
Whereas, the Hillcrest Rams controlled the lead until three minutes into the second quarter, pressing the Warriors into 12 turnovers in the first half, when all-state sophomore Jamez Rogers swished a three-pointer for Wando to give the Warriors their first lead since the first bucket of the game; and
Whereas, Rogersís shot triggered a shift in momentum to the Warriors, which he quickly capitalized on by posting the next seven points to ensure that they would not trail again the rest of the game; and
Whereas, the Rams responded by issuing eight unanswered points with three minutes left in the fourth quarter, reducing the Wando lead to 10 points, but the Warriors fiercely fired back when forward Taylor Majewski scored five straight points; and
Whereas, when time expired, the Wando Warriors stood victorious, hoisted the championship trophy, and proudly sported their state medals; and
Whereas, although Jamez Rogers led the Warriors in scoring with 25 points; double digits also were posted by point guard Amp Moore with 13 points and Andrew Glover with 11; and Taylor Majewski contributed 7 points and 8 rebounds, and center Matt Pegram finished with 9 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, agility and accuracy, Coach David Eaton and his skilled coaching staff drew on their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off court; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Wando High School basketball players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Wando High School boys varsity basketball team, coaches and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2014 Class AAAA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Lucy Beckham and Coach David Eaton.Ē
