Hibben House part of Old Village Tour

  • Thursday, April 10, 2014

The American Red Cross invites the public to the 7th Annual Old Village Home, Garden and Art Tour to be held Sunday, April 13 from 1-5 p.m. in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant.

The tour will begin at 111 Pitt St. where tickets may be purchased.

This wonderful event has become a welcome springtime occasion for hundreds across the Lowcounty, the South and beyond. Ticket holders will be able to tour gardens and six homes in the beautiful Old Village, including the historic Hibben House.

The historic Hibben House, which was built in 1755, is believed to be the oldest home in Mount Pleasant. The British used the home as their headquarters during the Revolutionary War. It is said that General William Moultrie, for whom Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island is named, was held captive in the home.

Also on tour will be a rarely seen garden on Haddrell’s Point of the Old Village. Landscape architect Sheila Wertimer, in collaboration with the interior design homeowner and architect Beau Clowney, married the interior and exterior spaces creating garden rooms and courtyards. The kitchen opens to a romantic wisteria arbor and courtyard that faces the water. The swimming pool hides behind a veil of tropical plantings. The exotic poolhouse was designed as a “Thailand meets Pawleys Island” outpost with Chinese fan palms, cassia and plumbago, while a Grandma’s Garden contains annuals and perennials.

Local plein air artists will be stationed among the gardens on tour and an art exhibit by local artists will be on Pitt Street.

“The Old Village Tour has many interesting aspects and one is the diversity of the homes that are on tour,” said Ann Edwards, co-founder of the Old Village Tour. “People can experience the beautiful homes on tour, view artwork from talented local artist and sample delicious food from local chiefs all while supporting a great cause.”

The proceeds from the event will benefit the programs and services of the American Red Cross. Tickets are $45 each or $35 per person for groups of 10 or more. Ticket can be purchased online at www.redcross.org/carolinalowcountry or by calling 843-764-2323 ext.379. Tickets are also available for purchase in Mount Pleasant at Abide-A-While Garden Center and Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant.
