Wando track and field boys and girls both placed in the top 10 overall standings last weekend at the 22nd annual Taco Bell Classic in Columbia.
Wando girls tallied 29 team points to finish fourth, just one point behind Nansemond River (30) for third place. Elizabeth Seton (45.50) took first, Fort Dorchester second (32).
Wando boys collected 18.20 points to finish ninth overall, 10 points off of third place Mallard Creek (28.20). Northwestern finished first (46), followed by Dematha Catholic (41) in second.
The event drew nearly 2,000 athletes from more than 150 schools from across the nation to Harry Parone Stadium at Spring Valley High School.
Warriors junior Kenny Waring took first place in the long jump at 23 feet and a half-inch, more than nine inches further than Waring’s first-place showing last week at the Father Kelly Classic on Daniel Island. Waring also placed 10th in the 100 meter dash (11.11) and helped Wando to a seventh-place finish in the 100 relay (42.89).
Wando senior Angelica Collins placed second in the girls long jump (19-05.5), second in the triple jump (38-08) and 11th in the 100 meter (12.30). Kendall Mercer placed second in the girls pole vault (11-06) while Sarah Lee took fourth (11-00). Kato Junior finished fourth in the boys 400 (55.92) and Gauge Wood earned sixth in the boys pole vault (13-06).
Also in the top 20 for Wando, Haley Barker placed 13th in the girls high jump (4-10), Monea Akinjobi 15th in the girls discus throw (96-04), Rosa Marie Compton 16th in the girls mile run (5:22.06) and Scott Stroman 20th in the boys 800 (2:00.88). The Wando girls relay teams placed 15th in the 800 relay (10:07.29), 20th in the 400 (4:14.46) and 20th in the 100 (49.90). Wando boys finished 14th in the 800 relay (8:17.14).
