Mark Evans threw seven scoreless innings to lead Wando past Westfield (Va.), 9-0, in the opening round of the 45th annual Hanahan Invitational Tournament Monday in Mount Pleasant.
The senior right-hander scattered five hits and struck out four while walking two in the win. Wando turned eight hits into nine runs, hitting .320 as a team.
Payton Muller broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning with a single to left field to score Tyler Ackard. Oliver Hill cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a three-run inside-the-park homerun to right-center field.
Evans needed just eight pitches to shut down Westfield in the top of the fourth. Wando carried the momentum into the bottom frame, driving in three more runs. Max Fries scored off an infield error. Ackard lined a single to left to score Barrett Walton, and Andrew Lee drove in Owen Ravenel with a single to left.
Evans didn’t allow Westfield another hit until two outs into the seventh inning, retiring 13 straight batters. Wando added two more runs in the sixth. Andrew Lee hit a sacrifice fly to score Ravenel, and Fries scored as Hogan Kelly reached on a fielder’s choice.
Muller finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and run scored. Ravenel was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and a walk.
Lorenzo Allensworth suffered the loss for Westfield on the mound, allowing six runs, five earned on four hits and two walks.
Wando advances to face Grassfield (Va.) in the second round back at Warrior Field.
Bishop England fell, 11-1, to Madison (Va.) at home in Monday’s opening round.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bishops surrendered seven runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Bishop England will face York at home Tuesday at Father Kelly Field on Daniel Island.
