Wando baseball fell, 8-4, to Grassfield (Va.) Tuesday in day two of the Hanahan Invitational Tournament at Warrior Field in Mount Pleasant.
Wando (10-5) tallied 11 hits, hitting .343 as a team but left nine base runners stranded, six in scoring position.
Senior right-hander Tyler Kimbrell suffered the loss for Wando, allowing six runs, four earned, off seven hits and five walks while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings. Brett Smith earned the win for Grassfield, striking out eight and giving up four runs, one earned off 10 hits and two walks through six innings.
Grassfield rang up four runs through the first two innings. Owen Ravenel answered for Wando in the fourth, reaching off an infield error with two outs while Hogan Kelly scored. Andrew Lee lined a double to left field in the fifth to score Oliver Hill.
Grassfield grabbed two runs back in the sixth with a fielder’s choice and infield error, but Wando countered with two in the bottom frame. Payton Muller singled to left to score Barrett Walton and Hill drove in Muller in the next at-bat with an RBI single.
Grassfield scored two more runs in the seventh off an outfield error and wild pitch to open a four-run advantage headed into the final three outs. Wando put runners on first and second with one out but flied out in back-to-back at-bats to end the game.
Hill finished 3 for 4 with an RBI, Walton 2 for 3 with a run scored and Noah LoCascio 2 for 4 to lead Wando at the plate.
Bishop England was defeated, 9-2, by York at Father Kelly Field on Daniel Island in day two of the H.I.T.
The Bishops entered the fifth inning trailing just one run before York rang up six runs to break open its lead. Bishop England scored two runs in the bottom frame, but York countered with two of its own in the top of the seventh.
