East Cooper preps rack up lacrosse honors

Twenty-seven East Cooper athletes garnered post-season honors on this year's S.C. High School Lacrosse Coaches Association awards lists.

Eighteen players received all-state selections and another nine earned all-Lower State nods.

Wando senior attack Tucker Dodson, senior midfielder Andrew Phelan and sophomore defender Thomas Gribben highlight the boys first-team all-state list. Dodson leads the Warriors with 38 goals, 44 assists and 61 ground balls this season. Phelan is second on the team with 56 ground balls, 11 goals scored with 10 assists and boasts a 72 percent faceoff percentage on 61 total. Gribben's 50 ground balls rank third on the team.

Bishop England girls lacrosse earned five first-team all-state selections with attacks Elena Bosco and Taylor Kennington, midfielder Isabel Burnett, defender Caitiln Greenho and goalkeeper Taylor Rice. Kennington has scored a team-high 48 goals this season, while Bosco leads the team with 61 assists. Burnett has 42 goals, a team-high 51 ground balls and won 100 draws. Greenho has won 29 draws with 18 groundballs and six takeaways. Rice has 57 saves against 103 shots on goal.

Junior midfielder Casey Costello and senior defender Christian Oliver represent Wando as girls first-team all-state. Costello leads Wando with 40 goals to go with 13 assists and 21 groundballs. Oliver leads the team with 27 takeaways, seven interceptions and has 27 ground balls this season.

Bishop England's Warner Jenkins and Jacob Hand, and Wando's Gavin Howley and Connor Simonson were named boys all-state second team. Bishop England's Jordan Mitchell and Carolyn Roberts were selected as girls all-state second team, along with Jessie Bunting and Christina Alexander from Wando.

Hamilton Brower, C.J. Andersen and Avery Smith were named boys all-Lower State from Wando, along with Christian Reinhardt from Bishop England. Wando's Maggie Connell, Alyssa Smith and Karlee Stinson were named girls all-Lower State, along with Bishop England's Jessica Penninger.

Lacrosse coaches statewide use a points scale to vote on players from a pool of nominations to select the SCHSLCA all-state teams.
