Wando lacrosse's title reign came to an end Monday in Lexington. The two-time defending state champions fell, 15-13, to Fort Mill in the championship round at White Knoll High School.

Trailing 10-5 at halftime, the Warriors reeled off five straight goals in seven minutes to tie the game. C.J. Andersen and Tucker Dodson both struck twice and Wright Bailey added one in the rally.

Tyler Lozinski broke the tie for Fort Mill (13-3) after just 20 seconds and sparked a 4-1 Yellow Jackets run including three unanswered through the final four minutes of the quarter.

“We were able to tie the game but they responded and we made mistakes,” Wando head coach Lance Renes said. “Turnovers, penalties, our mistakes ended up hurting us tonight. Next thing we knew, we were down again.”

S.C. Player of the Year Mitch Russell came out firing for Fort Mill scoring the Yellow Jacket's first three goals of the game. Matt Somjack added three of his own in the first as Fort Mill ended the quarter on a 7-1 run with a five-goal lead. Russell finished with six goals to lead all scorers.

“There's a reason he's the player of the year,” Renes said. “He's tough to contain. They're a strong offensive team. We put ourselves in a hole and had a tough time playing catch-up. We did our best. Our guys kept fighting and never gave up.”

Carson Horner, Andersen and Bailey each scored three goals to lead the Warriors offense. Jack Davies added two goals and an assist and Dodson scored one with two assists.

Wando (15-3) defeated Socastee, Hilton Head and Academic Magnet by a combined 62-10 to reach the state title game. The Warriors were undefeated at home and in region, and went 4-1 against out-of-state competition this season.

“I'm so proud of our guys for how they played this season,” Renes said. “One of our goals was to compete in the southeast and make a name in that region of America. We definitely put Wando on the map and we'll be back to compete again next year.”
