Wild Dunes Dolphins Swim Team will start registration for the 2014 season with a drop-in from 6-8 p.m., Monday, April 28, at the Isle of Palms Exchange Club, which is located at 201 Palm Blvd., Isle of Palms, near Breach Inlet.
In addition to registering, families can talk with the coaches and parents who lead the swim team, learn more about the season and how to volunteer, and have their children try on swimsuits. All families who want to participate are encouraged to stop by, though parents can sign children up later when starting practices.
The Dolphins Swim Team is a longstanding community tradition that brings together families and gives young athletes of all abilities, through the age of 18, the opportunity to compete while becoming stronger swimmers. Families from Isle of Palms, Sullivanís Island and other neighboring areas are welcome. You do not have to live in Wild Dunes to participate.
Swimmers who are new to the team are asked to do a swim evaluation at the Wild Dunes Swim Center pool on either Monday, May 5, or Tuesday, May 6, any time from 6-8 p.m. To join the team, swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool. Directions to the pool and passes will be available at the Wild Dunes front gate.
Practice starts for all swimmers Wednesday, May 7, from 6-7 p.m. for ages 8 and under, and 7-8 p.m. for ages 9 and up. After that, swimmers can attend evening practices Monday to Thursday through the end of May. The evening practice schedule will continue in summer, but with Wednesday meets from June 4 to July 16. Wild Dunes participates in the East Cooper Swim League, which will hold a championship meet at seasonís end in Mount Pleasant July 19.
Coach Cameron Oakley is returning to the Dolphins Swim Team for his third summer, and Coach Patrick Foos is back for his second summer with the Dolphins. Both are graduating from the College of Charleston, where they have been scholarship swimmers the past four years.
In addition, the Dolphins have added the new position of team manager, which will be filled by Eric Stabene. Eric teaches high school and has coached a variety of sports over the past decade. He swam competitively from ages 5 to 17 and has five years lifeguarding experience. He is also a swim team parent.
The Wild Dunes Dolphins Parent Volunteer Board will continue to be led by parent Lucie McLaughlin, who returns in her role as president for a second year.
