Sullivan's Island Town Council unanimously approved April 27 – May 4 as “Days of Remembrance” in memory of Holocaust victims and survivors Tuesday.

The week coincides with the United State Holocaust Memorial Council's Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust and includes Yom HaShoah on April 28, the nationally recognized Holocaust Remembrance Day. It marks the first time the Town of Sullivan's Island has adopted a proclamation in remembrance of the Holocaust.

The proclamation states, “We the people of Sullivan's Island should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust to remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny and ... The Days of Remembrance have been set aside for the people of the Town of Sullivan's' Island to remember the victims of the Holocaust as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all peoples.”

The town also approved motions Tuesday to recognize Peace Officers' Memorial Day, National Safe Boating Week and Student Painters' Day.

All flags on town buildings will be flown at half-staff on May 15 in honor of Peace Officers' Memorial Day. The day was adopted in memory of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and to honor those presently serving.

May 16–23 is designated as National Safe Boating Week designed to advocate safety on the water and promote the programs and equipment that enhance boating safety.

Student Painters is a sector of Young Entrepreneurs Across America, an organization that helps raise money for tuition and college expenses for students. May 9 will be known as Student Painters' Day to help promote the opportunities for these students to receive the skills and experience needed to develop into business leaders.
