‘Listen to your Mother’ returns

  • Friday, April 25, 2014

The “Listen To Your Mother” show, a national series of live readings by local writers in celebration of Mother's Day, will be presented in Charleston on Sunday, May 4, at Footlight Players Theatre (20 Queen St.) at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 before May 4 and $15 at the door. Ten percent of ticket sales will benefit Postpartum Support Charleston.

The Charleston show is directed and produced by Angie Mizzell, a writer and mom of three. “The Lowcountry is filled with powerful and diverse stories and storytellers, so I knew the community would embrace the concept,” Mizzell says. “We made the decision to hold the 5 p.m. show after the first show sold out weeks in advance.”

The original, true stories from the 15-member cast (14 women and one man) will transcend the commercialized version of motherhood we often hear about as we approach Mother's Day – stories about the pain of childbirth, losing a mom to cancer, raising a stepchild, learning to let our children go as they become adults and venture out into the world. The show even spotlights a woman who is not a mom, who shares how she has devoted her life to nurturing and caring for others. Some pieces are hysterical, some are poignant and all of them reveal some universal truth about motherhood.

“Listen To Your Mother” started in 2010 with one performance in Madison, Wisc. and has now become a nationwide movement – 32 cities are hosting local shows this year – creating a new way to celebrate Mother's Day by giving a voice to motherhood.

Charleston cast members are: Angela Goss Avery, Cindi Carver-Futch, Rhonda Devine, Becca Finley, Donloyn LeDuff Gadson, Anna Hartman, Radia Heyward, Janet Sheppard Kelleher, Erin Kienzle, Angie Mizzell, Jennifer Quattlebaum, Sean A. Scapellato, Nicole Seitz, Saritta Vann and Brandi Wolfe.
