Fair Housing Center promotes awareness

  • Saturday, April 26, 2014

The South Carolina Fair Housing Center (SCFHC) officially opened its doors September 2013 as a nonprofit civil rights organization serving the entire state of South Carolina. The SCFHC was founded by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) with the support of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO), for the private enforcement of the Fair Housing Act. It is now fully staffed, having hired an executive director in December 2013 to join its program director and fair housing specialist.

The mission and purpose of the SCFHC entails enforcement of fair housing laws across the state of South Carolina. This encompasses, in part, testing, as well as community education, outreach, training, promotion of best practices and expanding fair lending resources into underserved communities. The SCFHC advocates for the rights of individuals while striving to “promote fair housing laws and equal housing opportunity awareness.” There is also extensive work completed with fair housing testers, provision of education and outreach as well as fair housing training to various groups.

Complaint intakes are accepted daily regarding violations of the Fair Housing Act. South Carolina residents wishing to complete an intake may call 1-855-665-8549 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Anyone with questions regarding the South Carolina Fair Housing Center may contact Executive Director Tina L. Brown at 803-403-8447 ext.104.
